Chapter 56 Minor Ailment Foot conditions Sample Questions

1. Mr. C is a 54-year-old man who walks in to the pharmacy complaining of itchy, cracking and bothersome symptoms between the toes. It is in the middle of summer which is very hot and humid. He is the manager of a construction company, wears boot all day, eats a lot of candy and junk food all day to tie him over. He showers a little and takes personal hygiene measures. He wears the same socks over and over and since he has no time to do the laundry, he hangs them to dry, and puts them back on in the morning. He is looking for a cure since he will be dancing on the tables barefoot at his daughter's wedding in 6 weeks. Which of the following is least likely recommended OTC for the treatment of Tinea pedis?
  1. A. Nystatin
  2. B. Tolnaftate
  3. C. Clotrimazole
  4. D. Miconazole
Answer
Ans: A
Tips: Reference: CTMA. Superficial Fungal Infections are very common skin conditions commonly caused by two major groups of fungi, the dermatophytes and yeasts. Nystatin is ineffective for infections caused by dermatophytes but is used for cutaneous candidiasis caused by yeast. It is available as 100 000 units/g of either ointment or cream applied BID x 2-4 weeks.
